Described as a “fast-casual” restaurant by the Denver based chain, Smashburger is the new burger in Las Vegas. When the craving for a good burger hits, there’s no shortage of choices in this town. As far as chain burgers go, this one ranks at the top of our list.
Definitely a premium burger, the Angus beef is cooked in a radically different way. The meat is actually compressed and cooked on an extremely hot grill searing the outside to a carbon-crispy goodness you’re unlikely to achieve at home, while leaving the middle still incredibly juicy. Served on great buns (billed as “artisinal”) and topped with some exceptionally flavorful toppings, we were quite happy with our first Smashburger experience.
Located in a strip plaza on the southeast corner of Buffalo and Lake Mead, on a recent Saturday evening we chose to dine at one of their outside tables. Orders are placed at a counter and servers deliver orders to diners’ tables. Our burgers were brought to our table in less than 10 minutes. Our “Sin City” burgers topped with applewood smoked bacon, American cheese, grilled onions and their haystack fried onions were fantastic. Sides of Smashfries seasoned with rosemary, garlic and olive oil were very nice and a side of the thinly sliced “haystack” fried onions were tasty, if a bit on the greasy side. Next time (and there WILL be a next time) we plan to try the sweet potato fries and the fried veggies (flash fried asparagus, carrot sticks and green beans)-and one of their Haagen-Dazs shakes.
Our dinner for two including sides and beverages came in at $20.00. The menu offers a few nice surprises for a “fast casual” restaurant (some interesting toppings like garlic sautéed mushrooms, unique main dish salads and a liquor license soon to be approved).
