It’s easy to get into a rut food-wise and we’ve been in a Burger Bar rut for a few months. When anyone says “let’s get a burger” we make a bee-line for Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay. Feeling adventurous and on the advice of others we made a bold move to add a possible new burger to our rotation and dined at Laurent Tourondel’s BLT Burger at the Mirage hoping for a pleasant change of pace. Bad move it was.
With six in our party we ordered a nice cross section of the menu. Other than the fries and the chocolate milkshakes nothing stood out as memorable. One diner thought his BLT Classic burger was very similar to a Carl’s Jr. burger (not necessarily a compliment for a $12.00 hamburger). The Asian ‘Banh Mi” burger, an oddly flavored pork and shrimp burger with a sriracha mayonnaise, was sadly delivered with the mayo missing but was topped with a kosher dill slice that was the highlight of the sandwich (and the entire meal). Having already waited over 30 minutes for our orders to be taken, we hesitated to attempt to flag down a server to bring the mayo. Ditto for one of our beverages that never arrived.
The buns on the burgers were nothing special; the types of premium buns that can be found in any megamart. The meat (Kobe and Angus) was average, certainly not memorable. The onion rings could not possibly have been freshly made, they were suspiciously all the same size, shape and color, cold, hard and very greasy.
Granted, the place isn’t intended to offer high end dining but with the hype being part of the Laurent Tourandel empire something a little more special was expected from the reported 8 million dollar restaurant. Hubert Keller has nothing to worry about, we’ll think twice before straying away from near perfect Burger Bar in the future.
